Diabetes Danger Signs - What Your Clients Should Know

CommInsure has released an excellent summary for advisers on the impact of Diabetes on Australians and what can be done to improve an individual’s diabetic risk profile.

The topic of Diabetes was addressed by CommInsure National Technical Manager, Kyleigh Perkins, in a recent edition of the company’s ‘Did you know?’ series, recognising National Diabetes Week, which was held from 13th to 17th July.

The message to advisers and their clients is that while diabetes is a progressive condition, it is often a disease that is preventable by addressing certain lifestyle issues and choices.

In the article, CommInsure’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr William Monday, sets out a list of how a person’s risk profile can improve or be optimised by addressing a number of areas that include:

  • Cease smoking (if you are a smoker)
  • Lose weight if your Body Mass Index is elevated
  • Ensure that you regularly check your blood pressure and that it is controlled
  • Address your diet and avoid a diet high in cholesterol
  • Monitor your glucose control and maintain it at an optimal level which is an HBA1C below 7

Dr Monday adds that if a diabetic presents to CommInsure with a proven track record of the above actions then it will be taken into consideration when offering or reviewing cover for a client.
