The Leukaemia Foundation has reported a fantastic result for its 2009 Light the Night campaign, which saw around 22,000 people participating across Australia.
The Foundation raised over $1.2 million from sponsors and donors as it ‘lit the night’ in 20 cities around the country during September and early October.
… families, friends and co-workers gathered to remember, celebrate and give hope to patients and families living with blood cancers
Every event across the country saw gold, white and blue balloons adorn each location where families, friends and co-workers gathered to remember, celebrate and give hope to patients and families living with blood cancers.
The money raised from the Light the Night events will be used to fund Leukaemia Foundation support services such as:
- ‘Home-away-from-home’ accommodation close to hospitals
- Transport to and from treatment centres
- Education, information and practical support
The Foundation reports the funds will also contribute to cutting-edge research into the causes, treatments and cures for blood cancer.
2009 has been the first year where Light the Night has been a national event, the Foundation having piloted the event in a few cities in 2008, and it is looking to build on this year’s success in 2010.
And for Victorian-based readers of riskinfo who are looking for new challenges, the Leukaemia Foundation is offering the chance to participate in the annual Upstream 50km Challenge.
This Challenge sees individuals and teams participate in a 50km walk or run from Melbourne’s Docklands precinct to Donvale along the picturesque Yarra River.
Participants can enter either as teams for the full 50km or as relay teams, where each member of the relay team walks or runs a minimum of 30km.
The Upstream Challenge takes place on Saturday 7 November and anyone interested in participating can click here for more details.
