{"id":29975,"date":"2015-06-23T09:15:53","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T23:15:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=29975"},"modified":"2025-06-12T13:06:25","modified_gmt":"2025-06-12T02:06:25","slug":"adviser-mentality-shift-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2015\/06\/23\/adviser-mentality-shift-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"Adviser Mentality Shift Needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Advisers are facing a critical junction and need to adapt their mentality from adviser to business owner, Business Health\u2019s <strong>Terry Bell<\/strong> has cautioned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A recent study conducted by Business Health in conjunction with technology firm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubik.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rubik<\/a> found that the average Australian advice businesses has over 800 clients, the majority of whom are aged over 60. Combined with the fact that 81% of revenue is generated from existing clients, this presents a risk to advice practices, said Mr Bell.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20663\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2013\/04\/Terry-Bell-24.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20663\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2013\/04\/Terry-Bell-24.jpg\" alt=\"Terry Bell\" width=\"150\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terry Bell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey will, like all other Australian small business owners, need to come to grips with a volatile economy in which cash flow has to be maintained,\u201d he said, noting advisers also have to contend with factors like working in relative isolation, being time poor, battling new\/different competitors, finding good quality staff, and achieving a work\/life balance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd all under the microscope of an ever-scrutinising public and demanding regulator. Yes, it\u2019s a tough gig!\u201d acknowledged Mr Bell.<\/p>\n<p>In order to overcome these challenges, Mr Bell believes advisers need to shift their mentality towards that of a business owner.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;one of the biggest opportunities surely lies in the capital value of their practice<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIn the case of practice owners, one of the biggest opportunities surely lies in the capital value of their practice \u2013 the asset they are working so hard to preserve and grow,\u201d Mr Bell said.<\/p>\n<p>According to statistics from Business Health\u2019s Future Ready VI study, the average practice has an average annual revenue of over $1 million, with a notional profit of $330,000.
