Your Say"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"polls-161\" class=\"wp-polls\">\n\t\t<div class=\"pollHeader\"><strong>Do you support calls for a Royal Commission into the financial services sector?<\/strong><\/div><div id=\"polls-161-ans\" class=\"wp-polls-ans\"><ul class=\"wp-polls-ul\">\n\t\t<li>No <small>(70%)<\/small><div class=\"pollbar\" style=\"width: 70%\" title=\"No (70% | 144 Votes)\"><\/div><\/li>\n\t\t<li>Yes <small>(28%)<\/small><div class=\"pollbar\" style=\"width: 28%\" title=\"Yes (28% | 58 Votes)\"><\/div><\/li>\n\t\t<li>Not sure <small>(2%)<\/small><div class=\"pollbar\" style=\"width: 2%\" title=\"Not sure (2% | 4 Votes)\"><\/div><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul><div style=\"text-align: center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t<input type=\"hidden\" id=\"poll_161_nonce\" name=\"wp-polls-nonce\" value=\"74e4135fcb\" \/>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>We&#8217;re keen to report your views on whether there should be a Royal Commission into the financial services sector.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This poll question stems from the recent statement by Labor&#8217;s Shadow Minister for Financial Services, <strong>Dr Jim Chalmers<\/strong>, that a Shorten Labor Government would hold a Royal Commission into misconduct in the banking and financial services industry.<\/p>\n<p>Various industry stakeholders have already had their say on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jimchalmers.org\/#!Labor-Calls-for-Royal-Commission-into-Financial-Services\/c189z\/570764440cf2ecf50ee7d1ec\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Chalmer&#8217;s statement<\/a>, and with the polls currently running &#8216;neck and neck&#8217;, the prospect of the proposed Royal Commission looms as a distinct possibility.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of those polls where the question is easy and the response is complex. For example, some industry stakeholders, such as the FPA, have implied they may be ok with a Royal Commission into the sector if it carves out advice. In a statement this week, the FPA said: &#8220;&#8230;millions of tax payers\u2019 dollars could be wasted should the Royal Commission into financial services include advice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the AFA has questioned the cost\/benefit equation of a Royal Commission, saying the money spent on such an undertaking would be better spent on providing ASIC with greater resources to police the more than adequate rules that already exist (see: <a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2016\/04\/19\/royal-commission-overlooks-extensive-reviews-of-advice\/\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Commission Overlooks Extensive Reviews&#8230;<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Labor, stakeholders supporting the call for a Royal Commission include consumer groups and Industry Super Australia, whose concerns extend to how broadly and deeply unethical conduct exists in vertically integrated businesses.<\/p>\n<p>According to Labor, a Royal Commission into the financial services industry will examine issues including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How widespread instances of illegal and unethical behaviour are within Australia\u2019s financial services industry<\/li>\n<li>How Australia\u2019s financial services institutions treat their duty of care to their customers<\/li>\n<li>How the culture, ethical standards and business structures of Australian financial services institutions affect the behaviour of these institutions<\/li>\n<li>Whether Australia\u2019s regulators are really equipped to identify and prevent illegal and unethical behaviour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the proposal for this Royal Commission has initially been costed at $53 million over two years, advisers have already weighed-in to the debate:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;If a Royal Commission does disrupt some of the reforms that are clearly only in the interests of the banks and insurers increasing profits and not the interest of customers or advisers then this is a good thing.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s time for your say.
