{"id":38285,"date":"2017-09-12T16:50:01","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T06:50:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=38285"},"modified":"2017-09-13T05:34:30","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T19:34:30","slug":"insurer-arms-race-causing-sustainability-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2017\/09\/12\/insurer-arms-race-causing-sustainability-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Insurer &#8216;Arms Race&#8217; Causing Sustainability Problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The retail life insurance market has been slow to respond to issues around sustainability and increasing premiums and risks losing market share to the group life sector, according to\u00a0Rice Warner.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In a statement it released this week, the researcher said the growing complexity of retail life insurance products has not halted losses of $1.5 billion over the last four years on income protection policies and premium increases of 30 per cent or higher have also failed to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>The group stated \u201c\u2026this has occurred during a period of stable economic and employment conditions \u2013 conditions under which these policies ought to be profitable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, insurers had been engaged in an arms race by releasing more options and variants of cover to remain competitive on pricing and product design so that financial advisers would choose their product, the group claimed.<\/p>\n<h6>&#8220;&#8230;competition for market share has dominated and overridden the need for sustainable profitability&#8230;&#8221;<\/h6>\n<p>\u201cThe aim has been to meet as many potential customers\u2019 needs as possible.
