{"id":39581,"date":"2018-01-23T15:23:52","date_gmt":"2018-01-23T04:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=39581"},"modified":"2025-09-02T11:33:58","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T01:33:58","slug":"aia-calls-for-insurers-to-fund-rehabilitation-expenses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2018\/01\/23\/aia-calls-for-insurers-to-fund-rehabilitation-expenses\/","title":{"rendered":"AIA Calls For Insurers to Fund Rehabilitation Expenses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AIA Australia has added its voice to calls to allow life insurance companies to cover medical treatment and rehabilitation expenses, claiming that advances in treatment will allow people to return to work sooner.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31007\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31007\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2015\/09\/Damien-Mu-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31007\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2015\/09\/Damien-Mu-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AIA Australia and NZ CEO, Damien Mu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The insurer called for the government to change legislation that restricted life companies from contributing to early rehabilitation and medical expenses, moving away from the current system where insurers are restricted to occupational rehabilitation rather than medical assistance.<\/p>\n<p>AIA Australia and New Zealand Chief Executive, <strong>Damian Mu<\/strong> said the insurer was focused on driving reforms in the sector that benefitted consumers and helped people live longer and healthier lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor successful rehabilitation, we recommend supporting programs that seek to return people to productive work as soon as possible, which research shows improves their mental health and overall wellbeing,\u201d Mu said.<\/p>\n<h6>\u201cFor successful rehabilitation, we recommend supporting programs that seek to return people to productive work as soon as possible&#8230;&#8221;<\/h6>\n<p>AIA Australia stated that early intervention increased the likelihood of a person returning to work and pointed to research that indicates when a person is off work for 20 days the chance of returning to work is 70 per cent but this drops away the longer they are off work.
