{"id":44916,"date":"2019-06-03T13:14:15","date_gmt":"2019-06-03T03:14:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=44916"},"modified":"2019-06-05T07:03:03","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T21:03:03","slug":"aia-campaign-on-protecting-life-cover-in-super","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2019\/06\/03\/aia-campaign-on-protecting-life-cover-in-super\/","title":{"rendered":"AIA Campaign to Protect Life Cover in Super"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AIA Australia has joined forces with two of its superannuation partners to launch a national public awareness campaign intended to alert Australians to their potential loss of life insurance cover brought about by impending changes to superannuation laws.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"https:\/\/checkmycover.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-44917\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2019\/06\/190603-AIA-Campaign.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2019\/06\/190603-AIA-Campaign.png 721w, https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2019\/06\/190603-AIA-Campaign-282x300.png 282w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/a>Sending a similar message to consumers as the AFA has with its adviser members (see: <a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2019\/05\/27\/advisers-cautioned-on-potential-insurance-cancellations-inside-super\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advisers Cautioned on Potential Insurance Cancellations&#8230;<\/a>), the campaign addresses the Government&#8217;s &#8216;Protecting Your Superannuation\u2019 laws which, from 1 July 2019, will remove automatic life insurance cover from members with an account that has been inactive for 16 months or more.<\/p>\n<p>The insurer notes while the new laws represent good progress to address the issue of inappropriate balance erosion in superannuation, &#8220;&#8230;the changes could leave Australians who want or require life insurance uninsured at their time of greatest need&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Together with its partners Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation and Mercer, AIA Australia&#8217;s awareness campaign will inform individuals of the steps they can take to review their personal circumstances and decide whether or not to opt-in to maintain life cover.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign encourages members to \u2018Click, Check and Protect\u2019, and includes an information hub at <a href=\"https:\/\/checkmycover.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.checkmycover.com.au<\/a>. The website is intended to provide Australians with the necessary tools and information they need to better understand their cover, and to determine their needs.<\/p>\n<p>This activity will be supported by a national advertising campaign commencing this week, including billboards in major cities, radio and online ads.<\/p>\n<h6>&#8230;it\u2019s simply not the case that all members with an inactive account are without insurance needs<\/h6>\n<p>AIA Australia CEO Damien Mu said his firm supports the intent of the legislation, &#8220;&#8230;but it\u2019s simply not the case that all members with an inactive account are without insurance needs, where he says estimates suggest more than $500milliom is paid in claims to inactive members each year:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur concern is that a large majority of impacted members won\u2019t be aware of these changes until it\u2019s too late,&#8221; said Mu, who added, \u201cWe want all Australians to be informed of the changes and able to make the right decision based on their own individual circumstances.
