{"id":46779,"date":"2019-10-15T18:41:05","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T08:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=46779"},"modified":"2019-10-16T06:28:19","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T20:28:19","slug":"ending-of-grandfathered-commissions-confirmed-amid-fallout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2019\/10\/15\/ending-of-grandfathered-commissions-confirmed-amid-fallout\/","title":{"rendered":"Ending of Grandfathered Commissions Confirmed Amid Fallout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afa.asn.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Association of Financial Advisers<\/a> has delivered a damning critique following the final passage of legislation earlier this week that will ban grandfathered conflicted remuneration.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45844\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2019\/08\/Phil-Kewin-2019-v2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-45844\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2019\/08\/Phil-Kewin-2019-v2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AFA Chief, Phil Kewin &#8230;this outcome will be devastating for some members<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While acknowledging there will be some consumer perception positives that will stem from the ban on grandfathered conflicted remuneration &#8211; set to take effect from 1 January 2021 &#8211; the Association&#8217;s main position is summed up in a <a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2019\/10\/191015-AFA-Statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement to its members<\/a>, which reads in part:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo say that we are disappointed in the process, or more lack of due process, on this issue is an understatement\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In its message, CEO, <strong>Phil Kewin<\/strong>, said this outcome \u201c\u2026will be devastating for some advisers, particularly [for] those, who in good faith borrowed money to kick start or grow their client base, and now will not have time to review their clients whilst trying to maintain an income to repay a loan on an asset that now has no value.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kewin also noted that what he referred to as a fairly simplified narrative that is merely stopping payments to advisers who aren\u2019t servicing their clients, stemmed from the Banking Royal Commission recommendation 2.4, and has been influenced by ASIC in its quest to remove all conflicted remuneration:<\/p>\n<h6>There were no complaints tabled during the Royal Commission hearings where clients were disadvantaged by Grandfathered commissions<\/h6>\n<p>\u201cThere were no complaints tabled during the Royal Commission hearings where clients were disadvantaged by Grandfathered commissions and certainly no hearings that focussed on any advice related issues.
