{"id":5257,"date":"2010-03-17T10:25:32","date_gmt":"2010-03-16T23:25:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=5257"},"modified":"2020-02-06T08:09:09","modified_gmt":"2020-02-05T21:09:09","slug":"stepped-versus-level-premiums-key-factors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2010\/03\/17\/stepped-versus-level-premiums-key-factors\/","title":{"rendered":"Stepped Versus Level Premiums &#8211; Key Factors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CommInsure has entered the debate on the relative merits of stepped versus level premiums, cautioning advisers to consider a number of\u00a0 key points as part of their decision-making.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In a recent article\u00a0by CommInsure&#8217;s <strong>Jeffrey Scott<\/strong> within the insurer&#8217;s Spotlight Series 2010, Mr Scott highlights four key factors\u00a0for advisers when determining the suitability of\u00a0stepped or level premium for their clients:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How long does the client need cover?<\/li>\n<li>What will be the cumulative premium cost crossover point (ie where total premiums paid since inception become more expensive for stepped premiums versus level)?<\/li>\n<li>What effect will indexation have on the premium?<\/li>\n<li>What is the likelihood of future rate increases?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6>&#8230; a 25-year old client\u00a0would need to retain their policy until at least age 51<\/h6>\n<p>Addressing\u00a0the issue of the cumulative premium crossover point, Mr Scott cites a policy scenario where\u00a0a 25-year old client\u00a0would need to retain their policy until at least age 51 before the cumulative stepped premiums exceeded the level premium option:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the client lapses the policy within the first 26 years, stepped premiums would have been more cost effective,&#8221; said Mr Scott, who also acknowledged that these numbers change depending on the age of the client at policy commencement.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Scott also cautions over what he refers to as the &#8216;hidden&#8217; cost of CPI indexation and the potential impact this may have on level premiums.\u00a0 While some insurers apply all annual indexation increases based on the client&#8217;s age at commencement, Mr Scott says many products apply CPI indexation increases at the client&#8217;s current age next birthday at each renewal date, which can lead to\u00a0significant\u00a0cost increases on level premium policies.<\/p>\n<p>This article from CommInsure follows MLC&#8217;s announcement in August 2009 that it was changing the default option on its quotation software to level premium (see <a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2009\/08\/25\/mlc-steps-up-to-level\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MLC Steps Up to Level<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While level premiums are a great way for clients to budget their expenses over the long term, they may not be the most cost effective option over the medium term,&#8221; said Mr Scott.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CommInsure has entered the debate on the relative merits of stepped versus level premiums, cautioning advisers to consider a number of\u00a0 key points as part of their decision-making.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5257","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-general","category-products"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5257","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5257"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5257\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5257"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5257"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5257"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
