{"id":53292,"date":"2020-11-24T15:06:43","date_gmt":"2020-11-24T05:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=53292"},"modified":"2020-11-24T17:32:04","modified_gmt":"2020-11-24T07:32:04","slug":"australians-not-taking-skin-cancer-risks-seriously","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2020\/11\/24\/australians-not-taking-skin-cancer-risks-seriously\/","title":{"rendered":"Australians Not Taking Skin Cancer Risks Seriously"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not enough Australians are self-checking for possible signs of skin cancer, according to a report released by TAL.<\/p>\n<p>Its <a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2020\/11\/tal-spotchecker-australian-skin-safety-report-2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SpotChecker Australian Skin Safety Report<\/a> explores Australians\u2019 attitudes and actions around skin safety in a bid to encourage people to self-check their skin.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;one-third [of Australians] have never had their skin checked for signs of cancer<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The report reveals more than two thirds of Australians have not had a skin check in the past 12 months and that one-third have never had their skin checked for signs of cancer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53316\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53316\" style=\"width: 151px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2020\/11\/Priya-Chagan-e1606194230504.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-53316 \" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2020\/11\/Priya-Chagan-e1606194230504.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TAL CMO Dr Priya Chagan &#8230;a disconnect between Australians\u2019 intentions when it comes to skin safety and their actions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TAL&#8217;s SpotChecker initiative, now in its fifth year, states that 86 per cent of Australians are unaware of the high incidents of skin cancer in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The insurer&#8217;s Chief Medical Officer and General Manager of Health Services, <strong>Dr Priya Chagan<\/strong>, says there is a disconnect between Australians\u2019 intentions when it comes to skin safety and the actions they are taking.<\/p>\n<p>In partnership with Firstcheck the insurer offers 1,500 free online spot checks a year where people can upload photos of their skin to be reviewed by a specialist.
