{"id":55641,"date":"2021-04-30T13:17:03","date_gmt":"2021-04-30T03:17:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=55641"},"modified":"2021-05-04T16:46:39","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T06:46:39","slug":"new-asic-chair-deputy-chair-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2021\/04\/30\/new-asic-chair-deputy-chair-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"New ASIC Chair, Deputy Chair Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government has appointed <strong>Joseph Longo<\/strong> as ASIC&#8217;s new Chairperson and <strong>Sarah Court<\/strong> as the regulator&#8217;s Deputy Chairperson for a five year period commencing on 1 June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>A media release by Treasury announcing the appointments states Longo has had a \u201c\u2026long and distinguished career in corporate law, financial services, governance and regulation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The release notes Longo is currently a senior advisor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herbertsmithfreehills.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Herbert Smith Freehills<\/a> and prior to that worked as general counsel for Deutsche Bank in London and Hong Kong for 17 years, and has also previously been ASIC&#8217;s national director of enforcement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55665\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55665\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/04\/Joseph-Longo-e1620049927802.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55665\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/04\/Joseph-Longo-e1620049927802-249x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Incoming ASIC Chair, Joseph (Joe) Longo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Court&#8217;s background includes \u201c..extensive experience in regulation, compliance, consumer protection and civil litigation.&#8221; She has worked as a commissioner of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission since May 2008, where she is currently responsible for enforcement matters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Statement of Expectations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The same release announcing these two appointments also noted the Government will shortly be releasing a new Statement of Expectations intended to outline the Government\u2019s priorities for and expectations of ASIC.<\/p>\n<p>Treasurer <strong>Josh Frydenberg<\/strong> says the Statement of Expectations will make clear that the Government expects the Commission, as a whole, to operate as a strategic board and that all operational matters are the responsibility of the chair, who is the accountable authority.<\/p>\n<p>The Statement of Expectations will be issued following the commencement of the new chair and new deputy chair.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Government has appointed Joseph Longo as ASIC&#8217;s new Chairperson and Sarah Court as the regulator&#8217;s Deputy Chairperson for a five year period commencing on 1 June 2021.
