{"id":58904,"date":"2021-12-14T11:19:33","date_gmt":"2021-12-14T00:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=58904"},"modified":"2021-12-14T11:19:33","modified_gmt":"2021-12-14T00:19:33","slug":"aia-australia-new-partnership-to-drive-mental-health-reform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2021\/12\/14\/aia-australia-new-partnership-to-drive-mental-health-reform\/","title":{"rendered":"AIA Australia &#8211; New Partnership to Drive Mental Health Reform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AIA Australia has partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.australiansformentalhealth.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australians for Mental Health<\/a>, a not-for-profit group advocating for the Australian Government to implement a clear roadmap to improve the nation\u2019s mental wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>A statement from the insurer says that by joining forces, &#8220;&#8230;the duo will spark increased awareness and advocate for reform of Australia\u2019s mental health system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It states that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>20 percent of Australians aged 16-85 experience a mental health condition in any given year<\/li>\n<li>54 percent of Australians with a diagnosed mental health condition also do not receive adequate support<\/li>\n<li>Suicide is the leading cause of death in young people and accounts for the largest number of productive years of life lost due to premature death (115,000 each year in Australia), far exceeding that due to heart disease or cancer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_46961\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46961\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2019\/11\/Damien-Mu-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-46961\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2019\/11\/Damien-Mu-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-46961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Damien Mu&#8230;promoting early intervention and prevention-based initiatives to reduce the incidences, severity and duration of chronic mental illness&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>AIA says that Australians for Mental Health, founded by <strong>Pat McGorry<\/strong> AO, is supported by business, philanthropists and a community of people with lived experience of mental illness and who are passionate about improving Australia\u2019s mental health system.<\/p>\n<p>Driven by their aligned belief that all Australians should have access to effective and quality care, &#8220;&#8230;both AIA Australia and Australians for Mental Health consider that imminent change is needed to protect the well-being of the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The company says its decision to partner with the not-for-profit forms part of its focus on promoting early intervention and prevention-based initiatives to reduce the incidences, severity and duration of chronic mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the insurer released its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aia.com.au\/content\/dam\/au\/en\/docs\/reports\/5590-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5590+ report<\/a>, which shows the increasing impact that mental health related conditions and disorders have on global health statistics.<\/p>\n<p>CEO and Managing Director of AIA Australia and New Zealand, <strong>Damien Mu<\/strong> says the company\u00a0 is thankful for the opportunity to partner with Australians for Mental Health to initiate further improvements to Australia\u2019s mental health system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditionally, efforts to combat mental illness have focused on treatment and cure late in the course of illness, rather than on prevention or early intervention.
