{"id":58926,"date":"2021-12-14T15:05:42","date_gmt":"2021-12-14T04:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=58926"},"modified":"2024-10-30T08:44:15","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T22:44:15","slug":"grad-dip-not-required-under-labor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2021\/12\/14\/grad-dip-not-required-under-labor\/","title":{"rendered":"Grad Dip Not Required Under Labor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ten-year advisers of good standing would not be required to attain a graduate diploma education standard or equivalent under a Labor Government.<\/p>\n<p>This clarification was made by the office of Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation, <strong>Stephen Jones<\/strong>, following the announcement made by Jones at last week&#8217;s AIOFP Conference that an Albanese Labor Government would not ask financial advisers to obtain a bachelor\u2019s degree to retain their qualifications if they\u2019ve been working for a decade as an adviser and have a good record (see: <a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2021\/12\/09\/labor-would-scrap-bachelors-degree-for-10-year-advisers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Labor Would Scrap Bachelor&#8217;s Degree&#8230;<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Existing advisers prior to 1 January 2019 who hold no degree are currently required by FASEA to attain a bachelor\u2019s degree or an equivalent by 1 January 2026. Taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fasea.gov.au\/education-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FASEA\u2019s table of requirements<\/a> as its reference (see below), Riskinfo asked the Shadow Minister\u2019s office whether the existing adviser of ten+ years good standing would still be required to attain an Approved Graduate Diploma (8 subjects at AQF8).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58948\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58948\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/Helen-Morgan-Banda-cropped.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-58948 \" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/Helen-Morgan-Banda-cropped.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-58948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AFA CEO, Helen Morgan-Banda &#8230;a very good outcome for Australians seeking financial advice<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A representative from the Shadow Minister\u2019s office has subsequently confirmed to Riskinfo that under Labor\u2019s policy, ten-year advisers with a good record will not be required to attain a Graduate Diploma.<\/p>\n<p>In announcing Labor&#8217;s commitment last week to scrapping the bachelor&#8217;s degree (and Grad Dip) requirement for ten-year advisers of good standing, the Shadow Minister confirmed Labor would still expect advisers to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pass their professional exams<\/li>\n<li>Meet continuing professional development requirements<\/li>\n<li>Abide by an appropriate professional code of ethics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AFA CEO, <strong>Helen Morgan-Banda<\/strong>, has largely welcomed Labor&#8217;s policy announcement, stating this week that the AFA had always envisaged a model where a higher standard could be achieved, but not at the expense of losing so many experienced advisers, which was particularly important in the risk space:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We support the focus that Stephen Jones has placed on advisers being able to continue to service their clients,&#8221; she said, adding that, should changes to provide better recognition of prior learning and experience eventuate, this will make a significant difference in terms of the number of financial advisers who choose to continue to practice through to and beyond 2025. \u201cThis will be a very good outcome for Australians seeking financial advice, which we warmly welcome,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan-Banda added the AFA appreciates that a change of this scale will be very appealing for many, but possibly disappointing for those who have already made the commitment to complete the additional study: \u201cWe will await further details on this proposal and will enthusiastically work with all stakeholders to ensure a sensible outcome is achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58938\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58938\" style=\"width: 1086px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a style=\"text-align: center;\" href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/211214-FASEA-Minimum-Education-Requirements.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-58938 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/211214-FASEA-Minimum-Education-Requirements.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1086\" height=\"922\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/211214-FASEA-Minimum-Education-Requirements.png 1086w, https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/211214-FASEA-Minimum-Education-Requirements-300x255.png 300w, https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/211214-FASEA-Minimum-Education-Requirements-1024x869.png 1024w, https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/211214-FASEA-Minimum-Education-Requirements-768x652.png 768w, https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/211214-FASEA-Minimum-Education-Requirements-696x591.png 696w, https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/211214-FASEA-Minimum-Education-Requirements-1068x907.png 1068w, https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2021\/12\/211214-FASEA-Minimum-Education-Requirements-495x420.png 495w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1086px) 100vw, 1086px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-58938\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FASEA&#8217;s minimum education qualifications required for advisers by 1 January 2026.
