{"id":6927,"date":"2010-07-04T17:58:50","date_gmt":"2010-07-04T07:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=6927"},"modified":"2020-07-03T12:23:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-03T02:23:00","slug":"ip-adviser-tool-to-engage-clients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2010\/07\/04\/ip-adviser-tool-to-engage-clients\/","title":{"rendered":"IP Adviser Tool to Engage Clients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A universal online tool is available to advisers that will graphically\u00a0highlight to\u00a0their clients the likelihood they will become disabled during their working lives.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This free\u00a0service, called the <a href=\"http:\/\/disabilitycanhappen.org\/chances_disability\/pdq.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Personal Disability Quotient<\/a> (PDQ), was demonstrated at the\u00a0recent MDRT 2010 Annual Meeting in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>Advisers can input basic client data into this very simple online program, which will then return the\u00a0statistical likelihood that the client will become disabled during their working life.<\/p>\n<p>Provided by the non-profit US based organisation, the <a href=\"http:\/\/disabilitycanhappen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Council for Disability Awareness<\/a> (CDA), the underlying statistics are based on the US working population, but like many such statistics, the percentages are similar to those in other advanced countries, including Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0PDQ output will inform the client:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0likelihood they will become ill or injured and unable to work for at least three months before they retire<\/li>\n<li>The chances that the disability will last for five years or longer<\/li>\n<li>The average length of a disability claim, based on records of others with\u00a0similar circumstances to the client<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What the PDQ output then allows is the opportunity to demonstrate to the client the often large amount of future income the client is risking.\u00a0 The program refers to this as the clients&#8217; Earnable Income Quotient (EIQ).<\/p>\n<p>CDA President, <strong>Barry\u00a0Lundquist<\/strong>, said the PDQ is designed to first engage people&#8217;s interest and then to educate them about their risk of disability and how long it could last.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The next step is to complete an EIQ, &#8230; which quickly tabulates the value of a person&#8217;s future income stream,&#8221; said Mr Lundquist, adding that the\u00a0final step\u00a0empowers the adviser and client to take action.<\/p>\n<p>Mr\u00a0Lundquist said this tool has proven popular amongst many advisers, who use it in a variety of ways, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demonstrating at the client interview<\/li>\n<li>Including a\u00a0print-out in their client proposals<\/li>\n<li>Linking the PDQ tool to their own websites so clients can use the tool directly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Advisers can <a href=\"http:\/\/disabilitycanhappen.org\/chances_disability\/pdq.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">click here<\/a> to test this service to determine its relevance for their own business.<\/p>\n<p>The CDA website\u00a0offers a number of\u00a0other useful <a href=\"http:\/\/disabilitycanhappen.org\/advisor\/toolkit.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adviser resources<\/a> and customer engagement tools, such as a <a href=\"http:\/\/disabilitycanhappen.org\/chances_disability\/quiz.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Disability Awareness Quiz<\/a> which, while directed at\u00a0American consumers,\u00a0may still\u00a0offer value for many advisers and clients in Australia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6935\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6935\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2010\/07\/sa-advisers-mdrt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6935 \" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2010\/07\/sa-advisers-mdrt.jpg\" alt=\"Adelaide adviser and 2009 AFA Adviser of the Year Finalist, John Campbell (left) at this years' MDRT Annual Meeting, with fellow Adelaide-based MDRT colleagues, Sue Gibbs and Richard Campbell\" width=\"236\" height=\"132\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2009 AFA Adviser of the Year Finalist, John Campbell (left) at this years&#8217;
