{"id":75845,"date":"2025-02-21T11:18:59","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T00:18:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=75845"},"modified":"2025-02-21T11:43:19","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T00:43:19","slug":"asics-priorities-for-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2025\/02\/21\/asics-priorities-for-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"ASIC&#8217;s Priorities for 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Alan Kirkland<\/strong>, Commissioner of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), has provided an overview of the state of financial advice.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing industry stakeholders Kirkland outlined ASIC\u2019s observations, ongoing investigations, and priorities for the year ahead.<\/p>\n<p>He opened his remarks by acknowledging signs of improvement in the quality of financial advice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66182\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66182\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2023\/06\/Alan-Kirkland-headshot-2018-1-e1686632051238.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-66182\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2023\/06\/Alan-Kirkland-headshot-2018-1-e1686632051238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2023\/06\/Alan-Kirkland-headshot-2018-1-e1686632051238.jpg 352w, https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2023\/06\/Alan-Kirkland-headshot-2018-1-e1686632051238-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2023\/06\/Alan-Kirkland-headshot-2018-1-e1686632051238-350x420.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alan Kirkland.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He said factors contributing to this include higher adviser education standards, a stronger emphasis on the best interests duty by licensees, and the adoption of recommendations from ASIC\u2019s 2017 review of large institutions\u2019 oversight of advisers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it\u2019s fair to say, we\u2019ve seen some positive indications through work that ASIC has done,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That includes the work that we did on the Life Insurance Framework Review, where we saw a significant improvement in the quality of advice between 2017 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And although the scope and findings of that work were limited to life insurance advice, some of our observations from the review and input from industry stakeholders suggest that several factors have influenced an improvement in standards of advice in parts of the industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;30% increase in investigations launched in the last six months of 2024&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Turning to ASIC\u2019s agenda for 2025, Kirkland highlighted two key priorities with direct relevance to financial advice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improve consumer outcomes \u2013 covering predatory sales tactics, design and distribution obligations and dispute resolution<\/li>\n<li>Better retirement outcomes and member services \u2013 including a focus on entities and individuals involved in the provision of advice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He also pointed to an uptick in enforcement activity, with a 30% increase in investigations launched in the last six months of 2024 compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Kirkland concluded by saying ASIC\u2019s tougher enforcement stance is a necessary step to protect consumers and bolster confidence in the financial advice sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen advice goes terribly wrong, the harm it causes can damage confidence in the entire industry,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alan Kirkland, Commissioner of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), has provided an overview of the state of financial advice.
