{"id":78284,"date":"2025-07-31T10:35:53","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T00:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=78284"},"modified":"2025-08-04T10:16:48","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T00:16:48","slug":"peter-kell-to-lead-life-code-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2025\/07\/31\/peter-kell-to-lead-life-code-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Kell to Lead Life Code Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former ASIC Deputy Chair <strong>Peter Kell<\/strong> has been appointed by CALI to lead a <a href=\"https:\/\/lifecodereview.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cali.org.au\/life-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Life Insurance Code of Practice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from his term as ASIC\u2019s Deputy Chair (2013-2018), he was Deputy Chair of the ACCC where he was responsible for financial services, conduct regulation, enforcement, and policy development.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78286\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78286\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-78286\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2025\/07\/PETER-KELL-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Peter Kell\" width=\"150\" height=\"180\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peter Kell is to Chair a review of the Life Code.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kell was also CEO of consumer group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.choice.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Choice<\/a> and is currently the Chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcif.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Counselling Industry Fund<\/a>. His letter of engagement from CALI can be read <a href=\"https:\/\/lifecodereview.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Letter-of-engagement_Peter-Kell-290725_Signed_Redacted_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Life Code sets enforceable standards life insurers agree to uphold when providing services to their customers, covering areas not addressed by the law.<\/p>\n<p>CALI CEO <strong>Christine Cupitt<\/strong> said the review is intended to be &#8220;thorough, inclusive, and credible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter Kell is uniquely qualified to lead this review,\u201d she said. \u201cThe Life Code is a cornerstone of how the industry commits to treating Australians fairly.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This review is an important opportunity to hear from the community&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis review is an important opportunity to hear from the community, consumer advocates, regulators, and the industry to ensure the code remains strong, relevant, and trusted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kell said broad feedback is critical to the success of the review and will help ensure the code \u201cevolves to meet emerging challenges\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The code was the responsibility of the FSC until September 2023 when it was <a href=\"https:\/\/fsc.org.au\/news\/media-release\/media-release-life-insurance-code-of-practice-transition?_gl=1*55xnjr*_ga*Mjg4NTQ3ODA1LjE3MzgxODk3Mzg.*_ga_N97GDCW085*czE3NTM5MTk3MzAkbzQxJGcxJHQxNzUzOTIwMDYyJGozNSRsMCRoMA..\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transferred<\/a> to CALI.<\/p>\n<p>CALI&#8217;s review starts 1 October 2025 with a new <a href=\"https:\/\/lifecodereview.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> featuring updates, key dates, and information on how to have your say.<\/p>\n<p>A consultation paper will be released on 17 October 2025, with public submissions open until 15 December 2025. Stakeholder engagement will continue into early 2026, with the final report to be delivered to CALI by 30 June 2026.
