{"id":79222,"date":"2025-09-11T12:32:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T02:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=79222"},"modified":"2025-09-16T09:12:24","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T23:12:24","slug":"tpd-when-less-is-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2025\/09\/11\/tpd-when-less-is-more\/","title":{"rendered":"TPD \u2013\u00a0When Less is More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those taking part in an <a href=\"https:\/\/events.zoom.us\/eo\/Ak6TGlz2srGumnXnPjmPHsWLEWVlFkrxuu_SXEjWyEZvLeUKlh5F~AggLXsr32QYFjq8BlYLZ5I06Dg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acenda webinar<\/a> heard that as the disability landscape evolves, advisers must carefully assess the exact needs of their clients when discussing TPD cover.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marshall Ross<\/strong>, the firm\u2019s Partner Education Manager, reminded advisers that their clients are being pulled in many directions when it comes to their finances, and that advisers need to be strategic when recommending the level of cover.<\/p>\n<p>He advocates that when it comes to TPD, advisers should prescribe the minimum amount of cover needed. In other words, zero-in on the risks clients want cover for, and prepare a policy that meets it \u2013 and no more.<\/p>\n<p>Using medical parlance, he referred to it as \u201cthe minimum effective dose\u201d. Not too much, and not too little to protect their client.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79223\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79223\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-79223\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2025\/09\/\u00a9GSM_MLCL_Distribution-Team_PROFILE-PHOTOG_QLD_MARSHALL-ROSS-0004-1.jpg\" alt=\"Marshall Ross of Acenda.\" width=\"150\" height=\"180\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79223\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marshall Ross.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge we\u2019ve got, particularly from a TPD perspective, is that it\u2019s a big bad world out there and there is a huge range of different things that could happen from a TPD perspective,\u201d said Ross.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom an occupational perspective there\u2019s a threshold that I have to meet to have a claim paid, but there\u2019s a whole range of events that could be above and beyond that threshold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only need to meet that lower threshold to have a claim paid, and this becomes really challenging. How do we deal with that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Without being able to predict what a client may face in the future, he said advisers are in an impossible position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way to approach it is through the concept of best estimates,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Advisers have to make assumptions to account for different things, but it\u2019s educated advice&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOur best estimate really is valuable to us as part of our philosophy when we\u2019re building-in how we deal with disability cost. It\u2019s upfront and honest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou acknowledge the limitation, saying it\u2019s simply a best estimate and has limitations. This is really freeing because it doesn\u2019t position us as having an exact solution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the client has an expectation at claim time for TPD, that all possible scenarios and costs and events are going to be accounted for as part of that, then there\u2019s a chance they\u2019re going to be disappointed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all about finding common ground, says Ross \u2013 a palatable premium for acceptable cover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdvisers have to make assumptions to account for different things, but it\u2019s educated advice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re using data, we\u2019re using probability and statistics, we\u2019re taking an analytical approach so we arrive at the best option for the kinds of expenses that people might incur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The absolute goal, says Ross, is for advisers is to be transparent so clients understand what they are and are not covered for, having made \u201can informed decision\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/events.zoom.us\/ev\/AsRYLVklfMRdtlGs5XLxRpMfBHpDFoTXig59wOU5mhV9MmwyDnqe~Ahz9vk7TTrgt0vCD8Dj2omGRlFQ2SG9iaGaO6PS1eZZxOlXZI_Yuu-kG1g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> to watch the full webinar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those taking part in an Acenda webinar heard that as the disability landscape evolves, advisers must carefully assess the exact needs of their clients when discussing TPD cover.
