{"id":79880,"date":"2025-10-27T15:40:48","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T04:40:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=79880"},"modified":"2026-02-18T11:12:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T00:12:22","slug":"swiss-re-clarifies-statement-on-pausing-new-clients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2025\/10\/27\/swiss-re-clarifies-statement-on-pausing-new-clients\/","title":{"rendered":"Swiss Re Clarifies Statement on Pausing New Clients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swiss Re has moved to clarify last week&#8217;s announcement that it has paused new business activities in Australia, saying it continues to support its existing life insurance partners and that there is no impact on advisers writing business with insurers.<\/p>\n<p>Last week the firm announced it will \u201cnot seek to add new clients in the life insurance segment until the market demonstrates a clear shift to sustainable product design\u201d (see: <a href=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2025\/10\/23\/swiss-re-pauses-new-business-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swiss Re Pauses New Business Activities<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, it has since stated that while relationships with existing insurers working with the firm will continue, it will not be accepting any new insurers (clients).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There is no impact on advisers writing business with insurers&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe will support existing insurers to act with urgency in designing and enhancing products that better meet the needs of consumers and lead to more sustainable outcomes. There is no impact on advisers writing business with insurers as a result of this change,\u201d the firm confirmed Monday.<\/p>\n<p>As previously reported, <strong>Lloyd Campbell Gibson<\/strong>, Head Life &amp; Health Reinsurance Australia &amp; New Zealand at Swiss Re, said: &#8220;Our dedication to the Australia and New Zealand markets remains unwavering, and this decision is necessary to safeguard our portfolio and to advocate for reform regarding product design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an industry, we must transition from the sole focus of claims payment to partnering on an individual&#8217;s health journey. Through evidence-based changes, TPD can become a more adaptive and accessible form of protection for future generations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>AIA CEO and MD <strong>Damien Mu<\/strong> said Swiss Re\u2019s announcement is the outcome of the stark reality of claims results in the Australian market.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It sends a strong message to all stakeholders \u2013 the industry first and foremost, but also to regulators and Government \u2013 about the work we all need to do to ensure the future sustainability of life insurance in Australia,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is a priority for AIA, as it is for the industry as a whole.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The continued acceleration of mental health-related disability claims needs to be considered&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Important work is being undertaken by the Council of Australian Life Insurers to assist, and like AIA, many individual insurers have programs of work underway.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70048\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70048\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70048\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2024\/02\/damien-mu-e1708907551389.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"181\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Damien Mu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;To tackle this effectively, we need to think differently about how we design products, how we underwrite and how we manage claims.
