{"id":81666,"date":"2026-04-07T10:59:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T00:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/?p=81666"},"modified":"2026-04-10T11:20:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T01:20:40","slug":"general-advice-gains-traction-at-riskinfocus-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/2026\/04\/07\/general-advice-gains-traction-at-riskinfocus-26\/","title":{"rendered":"General Advice Gains Traction at Riskinfocus 26"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"header row\">\n<div class=\"intro\">\n<h3>General advice in life insurance is back in focus, with advisers at Riskinfocus 26 pointing to its potential to ease a growing affordability divide, a development drawing much reader interest this week&#8230;<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The role of general advice in life insurance is growing with advisers taking part in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riskinfocus.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Riskinfocus 26 CPD Tour<\/a> panel debate saying it has the potential to address a growing affordability divide.<\/p>\n<p>Panellists at the Melbourne leg of the event agreed the cost of delivering risk advice is out of reach for many people, particularly the younger cohort.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stefan D\u2019Alessandro<\/strong>, Founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/therisklab.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Risk Lab<\/a>, has already included general advice as part of the mix to help those who might otherwise go without cover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a demographic that\u2019s been underserved,\u201d he said. \u201cGeneral advice allows us to engage with them in a way that\u2019s commercially viable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019Alessandro also said many of his clients have a clear idea of what they want, having already carried out their own research, and take a more active role in decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>However, he cautioned that operating in a general advice framework requires discipline, particularly in avoiding the inclusion of personal circumstances into recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s more rigid than people think,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have to be very clear [to clients] about what you can and can\u2019t do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While supportive of the concept, other panellists highlighted the practical and philosophical challenges of adopting general advice within established advice businesses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nga Vu<\/strong>, a Financial Adviser at <a href=\"https:\/\/lautumlife.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lautum Life<\/a>, sees a role for general advice, but conceded that shifting away from a personal advice mindset during client consultations can be difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019ve been operating in that [personal advice] framework for a long time, it\u2019s not easy to change how you approach client interactions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Vu said developing robust processes and clear boundaries would be critical for advisers considering the model, particularly from a compliance perspective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jamie McIntyre<\/strong>, Founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macfinancialadvice.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mac Financial<\/a>, said while he does not see general advice forming part of his fee-for-service business model he accepts there\u2019s a place for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it helps more people get insured, that\u2019s a positive outcome,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Audience polling at the six Riskinfocus 26 events suggested attitudes are evolving, with a significant proportion of attendees indicating they are now open to insurance solutions being delivered under a general advice framework.<\/p>\n<p>Pictured top: <em>The adviser panel of (L-R) Jamie McIntyre, Nga Vu, and Stefan D\u2019Alessandro discuss general advice at Riskinfocus 26 in Melbourne, led by moderator Dr Jeffrey Scott.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>General advice in life insurance is back in focus, with advisers at Riskinfocus 26 pointing to its potential to ease a growing affordability divide, a development drawing much reader interest this week&#8230;
