The failures occurred between July 2023 and May 2025 and resulted in 358 breaches of the code.<\/p>\n<p>Some customers experienced delays of more than eight months in the assessment of their claims, with the insurer subsequently paying a combined total of $160,000 in interest to 101 customers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;customers can be left facing unnecessary stress, uncertainty and financial pressure&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Chair of the LCCC, <strong>Jan McClelland<\/strong>, said delays in claims handling could have serious consequences for people already experiencing difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen an insurer does not ask for the information it needs as early as possible, claims can stall and customers can be left facing unnecessary stress, uncertainty, and financial pressure,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69330\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69330\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69330\" src=\"https:\/\/riskinfo.com.au\/news\/files\/2024\/01\/Jan-McClelland-2-e1704748123572.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"180\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jan McClelland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The LCCC found the failures were linked to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Staff shortfalls<\/li>\n<li>Capability gaps<\/li>\n<li>Outdated claims practices, and<\/li>\n<li>Insufficient monitoring and oversight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The LCCC issued the insurer with a formal warning and required it to undertake an independent audit of its compliance with the code.
