Offering a five-year rate guarantee, the new offer retains the core features of traditional TPD while introducing clearer assessment criteria for certain conditions and is designed to be lower-priced than traditional TPD cover.

The development of TPD CORE is in response, according to the insurer, to a changing claims landscape. In a statement accompanying the launch of this initiative, AIA notes traditional TPD cover was designed for claims with clear and observable physical impairment. But with conditions such as mental health now accounting for around one-third of TPD claims paid across the industry, and more than $2 billion in annual payouts, it reaffirms traditional TPD is under strain.

The insurer says TPD Core places greater emphasis on functional impairment and whether a condition has resulted in severe, enduring and permanent disability rather than relying predominantly on diagnosis alone.

How claims are assessed under TPD CORE

For most conditions, AIA says claims are assessed in the same way as traditional TPD.

The difference applies to certain specified conditions, which include mental health conditions and complex conditions including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Long Covid, Fibromyalgia and persistent cognitive and neuro-symptom presentations.

For these specified conditions, TPD CORE applies the following additional eligibility conditions when claiming:

A minimum 24-month continuous treatment period

Assessment under the Any Occupation definition only, even where the client holds Own Occupation cover

For mental health conditions, use of the Psychiatric Impairment Rating Scale (PIRS), with a minimum severity score of 31% for the condition to be considered a Severe Functional Impairment

Requirements that the client be under the care of a specialist medical practitioner and engaging with all reasonable treatment and rehabilitation

Medical evidence and opinion to support the claim, and requirements for the condition to be stable and permanent.

AIA emphasises the additional requirements do not apply to conditions that are not specified conditions, except where a specified condition materially contributes to the disability.

TPD CORE key features

Key features of TPD CORE include:

Available as Own Occupation or Any Occupation cover

Available inside or outside superannuation, including via a Superannuation PLUS structure. TPD Maximiser is also available.

Only available as a rider to Life cover; not as standalone cover

Lump sum benefit of up to $3 million, with limits varying by occupation (D occupations $2m; E occupations and Home Duties not available)

Five-year rate guarantee

Same three-month no-work waiting period as traditional TPD

Day 1 TPD for selected serious conditions

No indexation. Cover can be increased under Guaranteed Future Insurability (GFI)

Partial and Permanent Disablement benefit

30-day cooling-off period when adding or switching to TPD CORE

Five-year rate guarantee

A notable feature of TPD CORE is the five-year rate guarantee, which aligns with AIA’s Income Protection CORE benefit, and is a direct response to industry frustration over annual premium increases.

The insurer notes that while the guarantee protects against repricing, premiums may still change during this period as a result of factors such as age changes, policy fee increases, government charges, discounts, benefit changes, or a change in premium frequency.

More information including a range TPD CORE resources and full detail is available on AIA’s dedicated TPD CORE portal.

Priority Protection updates

AIA has also made numerous updates across the Priority Protection range, effective from 31 August 2026. Key changes include:

Addressing over-insurance

Benefit indexation has been changed to the lesser of the CPI increase and 3%

TPD Any Occupation maximum sum insured has been reduced from $5 million to $3 million for new business

Clients can now permanently opt out of having indexation automatically applied and can opt back in at any time with no underwriting.

Policy fees

Policy fees are changing for both new business and existing business.

For new business, the policy fee has been removed for new policies under Priority Protection 26

From 1 October 2026, policy fees for existing business will increase to:

$9.90 monthly

$57.76 half-yearly

$110.02 yearly.

Other Benefit Changes

There have been a range of changes across definitions, clauses and compliance with some of the key changes including:

TPD occupation definition updated: Any and Own TPD definitions have been updated to align with TPD CORE, and Own Occupation definition has been updated to better define the occupation used for assessment.

Income Protection CORE waiting period reduction: clients who have cancelled an existing Group Salary Continuance arrangement can reduce their IP CORE waiting period to 90 days with no underwriting, subject to conditions in the PDS.

Guaranteed Future Insurability (GFI): qualifying event types have been simplified and the exercise window has been broadened. Clients can apply within 60 days of the event, or within 30 days before or after the next policy anniversary following the event.

Business Safeguard Forward Underwriting: qualifying event types have been clarified and the exercise window broadened.
