Nonetheless, global research released by LIMRA in association with Capgemini suggests life insurance affordability is often a perception problem and that consumers believe it costs far more than it actually does (see: Confusion Driving Consumers Away From Life Insurance).

What does your own experience tell you? Do you think the cost of life insurance (Death/TPD/IP and Trauma) is indeed mostly affordable? Or at the very least, is it impossible to generalise to this extent?

The same research tells us 47% of Australian consumers considering taking out life cover feel confused, uncertain or unconvinced by the information they find, which – when combined with the real or perceived cost of life insurance – is driving prospective policy holders away from completing the task.

Affordability is a universal constant when it comes to discretionary household spending in Australia. But consumer behaviour in recent years – let’s say post-pandemic – seems to have increased in its intensity in terms of how Australians respond to cost of living issues within their home and their family circumstances.

We’re not sure what the next part of this conversation should be, so we’re handing it to you from here and will report back next week…

Our latest poll is taken from recently-released consumer research which suggests the life insurance affordability barrier is often a matter of perception rather than reality.
