AFA Calls for Female Excellence Award Nominations

Nominations are now open for the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA) Female Excellence in Advice Award, following its official launch in Sydney last week.

The award was formally launched by guest speaker Professor the Honourable Jennifer Boland, Judge of the Appeal Division of the Family Court, who shared her experiences as a woman working in an industry in which women were historically underrepresented.

“I am encouraged to see initiatives such as the Female Excellence in Advice Award because it encourages not only participation but excellence in what has, traditionally, been the male-dominated arena of financial services,” she said.

“In my 11 years as a judge of the family court I saw first-hand how many women had no superannuation, no life insurance, and just how vulnerable they were at a time of marriage breakdown,” said Professor Boland.  She issued a challenge to the financial services industry to help women make time to plan for their financial future.

Guests also heard from AFA GenXt chair and Rising Star Award nominee, Sarah Riegelhuth, who said the award would push more professional women into the advice business.

… this award is an important first step in tackling the gender gap

“When compared with our male counterparts, women are still undervalued and underpaid. The ‘Glass Ceiling’ still exists.  I believe this award is an important first step in tackling the gender gap, and inequality.

“By recognising outstanding achievement and leadership within the financial advice profession, the AFA is promoting better representation within the ranks of financial advisers, who will be able to reach more women who are seeking financial advice,” Ms Riegelhuth said.
