CALI has welcomed the introduction of a bill in the Federal Parliament that proposes to ban predictive genetic test results in life insurance sector.
CALI CEO Christine Cupitt said the tabling of the bill is an important milestone for Australians and their families, and the next step for Government and industry to reinforce confidence in both predictive genetic testing and life insurance.
The Treasury Amendment Bill 2025 limiting the use of genetic information by life insurers will be debated next year.
“This legislation will give Australians more certainty and empower them towards better health outcomes,” said Cupitt.

“No one should be deterred from taking predictive genetic tests that help them to better manage their health.
“As life insurers, we want people to access the information they need to make informed choices about their health and to manage it proactively.”
In 2019, Australia’s life insurers introduced a mandatory standard that restricts the use of predictive genetic test results in underwriting, ensuring Australians could pursue testing with confidence.
Cupitt said the rapid evolution of genetic science has made government action both timely and necessary.

Will CALI guarantee that customers won't see their premiums increase due to insurers being selected against.
