News that TAL updated its flagship retail product to include a new TPD option and strengthened IP cover attracted plenty of reader interest this week…
TAL has updated Accelerated Protection, its flagship retail product, to include a new TPD support option and strengthened IP cover for self-employed customers.
The support option has been designed specifically for certain mental health, chronic fatigue and functional conditions where recovery outcomes can vary significantly.
Customers who choose this option receive 20% of their sum insured each year for claims involving conditions such as mental health, chronic fatigue, and functional conditions, provided they continue to meet the TPD criteria at annual review.
The company states this structure provides ongoing financial support during recovery, with the certainty that if a client is unable to return to work, they’ll receive their full sum insured over time. Claims for all other health conditions are paid as a full lump sum, states the firm.
During their claim, customers can also access tailored health programs through TAL Health for Life to support their recovery.
Self-employed
TAL’s updates to IP products for self-employed clients include redesigned offsets for ongoing income, and updated waiting period rules that allow customers to undertake limited administrative tasks during the waiting period without affecting their eligibility.
The firm says the changes reflect the realities of business ownership, giving self-employed customers greater confidence their cover will support them through recovery and help to keep their business running.
TAL CEO Fiona Macgregor says the business consulted widely with advisers on the changes.

Speaking to Riskinfo she said: “The team has spent quite a lot of time talking to advisers about how we’re thinking about future products.
“I would say that among insurers, policy makers, advisers, and the medical profession, there’s something of a shared view that products that better support potential for recovery – where recovery is uncertain – are a good thing and are what the community needs.
“Through the benefits we pay, there’s a substantial amount of money going into the community, and we want to make sure it’s helping people thrive, and if they can, to get better and get back to work, and that’s good for them, it’s good for everyone.”
Gavin Teichner, TAL Chief Executive – Individual Life, said: “Our focus is on ensuring TAL’s products reflect how Australians live and work today and deliver genuine value. We’ve taken an evidence-based approach with these changes to Accelerated Protection to ensure meaningful support for those who need it, while maintaining value for all our customers.”
