Claims Philosophy Poll

All financial advice practices should have a documented claims philosophy, irrespective of the nature of the advice offer.
  • Agree (71%)
  • Disagree (19%)
  • Not sure (10%)

Our latest poll represents a recognition that the life insurance advice sector is evolving.

Twenty years ago – perhaps even ten years ago, this poll question would likely not have entered the thinking of most advisers and other industry stakeholders. But times change.

In 2026, many advice practices and AFSL firms have developed documented life insurance advice philosophies, which can vary depending on the nature of the practice’s advice proposition. In a similar vein, is it time for all advice businesses to also develop and document their claims philosophy?

TPD Claim Support’s Trevor Battersby thinks you should (see: Call to Document Claims Philosophy). According to Battersby, the harsh reality in today’s world is that regardless of whether advisers and advice practices charge fees for claims services, they remain liable and open to litigation for poor claims outcomes. He says advice businesses should be making deliberate and documented decisions about:

  • How they handle claims
  • What services they provide
  • When they refer clients out
  • Whether they charge fees for claims support

Does this approach resonate with you, irrespective of whether you’re a risk specialist or generalist adviser? Do you already have a documented claims philosophy for your advice business? Do you think a documented claims philosophy is necessary, or is this a bit ‘over the top’ in your view?

It’s over to you. Tell us what you think and we’ll report back next week…
