Vale Howard Horder – MH17

The Australian life insurance community is preparing to farewell one of its highly-respected contributors, who was killed in the Malaysian Airlines MH17 tragedy.

Queensland’s Howard Horder and his wife, Susan, both lost their lives on flight MH17. Mr Horder’s career was spent mostly working within the Queensland life insurance industry, which included senior management roles with Australian Eagle, Prudential and Colonial Life.

Following the implementation of the Financial Services Reform Act in the early 2000s, Mr Horder served the financial adviser community in a senior capacity with licensee groups including Financial Services Partners and Sentry, before retiring in 2012.

A close adviser friend to Mr Horder has told riskinfo that Mr Horder was a highly valued and respected member of Australia’s life insurance community: “He was always the adviser’s man,” he said.

A memorial service celebrating the lives of Howard and Susan Horder will be held at Eatons Hill in Brisbane on Friday August 15. Click here for further details.

  1. I met Howard many years ago in my early days in the industry. I think it was with City Mutual (now part of MLC). He was an inside person then and was always pleasant, helpful and likeable.

I’m truly sorry to hear of Howard’s death. He remains the only person I know to die on MH17. Like all the others on that ill-fated plane, he deserved better.

  2. I worked with Howard at Colonial and enjoyed his steadying influence in an organisation that was struggling to combine three insurance brands. His focus was always about the adviser relationship and maintaining a positive culture.
He and Susan were really enjoying their retirement – it is sad to hear of their passing. I’m sure there will be many people paying their respects next week.

  3. I worked as a life insurance agent with guardian assurance in the 1980 to 1990 period where I met Howard who was a BDM He was a very decent citizen ,loyal and a hardworking employee
Howard and I enjoyed a number of times together , fishing and golfing and at work functions
Howard and Susan also joined my wife Ann and I to the occasional Dinner
Our condolences to the family, they will be sadly missed by many family and friends
