AIA Ambassadors Step up For Mental Health

AIA Australia helped raise funds for mental health charity Black Dog Institute at the City2Surf fun run in Sydney. Around 90,000 competitors took part in the event on Saturday 10 August.

For the second year in a row, AIA ambassadors Shane Crawford, Sam Gash, and Guy Leech ran on a treadmill at the top of ‘Heartbreak Hill’ – part of the fun run route – and for every mile they completed AIA donated $300 to the institute.

AIA CEO Damien Mu said: “Physical activity is a preventative behaviour that supports mental wellbeing. People who take 10,000 steps a day have been found to experience half the rate of depression compared to those taking fewer than 2,000 steps.

“Our research also found that if Australians improved their average health behaviours, the national depression rate could reduce from six per cent to 4.7 per cent.”

Latest claims data from AIA show:

  • Mental health-related disability claims have grown from 15% of all AIA claims in 2014 to 23% 2024, with 2025 figures continuing the upward trend
  • AIA payments for mental health claims almost doubled from 2023 to 2024 to $557m
  • For TPD claims in the first five months of this year, 28% were mental health related
  • 32% of mental health TPD claimants and 28% of IP claimants in 2024 were aged under 40

Zurich

Zurich has pledged $20,000 to Breast Cancer Network Australia to help fund essential support services, resources and advocacy programs for individuals and families affected by breast cancer.

Cancer was the second most common cause for a life insurance claim at Zurich last year, representing more than 20% of all claims and resulting in nearly $500m in claims payments. Breast cancer accounted for 20% cancer claims.
