The Deputy Chair of ASIC, Peter Kell, has announced his resignation from the regulator six months after the Federal Government extended his appointment for another year.

Kell’s departure from ASIC will be his second from the regulator where he was Executive Director of Consumer Protection and New South Wales Regional Commissioner from 1998 to 2004.

He rejoined ASIC as a Commissioner in November 2011 and was appointed as Deputy Chair in May 2013. Prior to that held the roles of Deputy Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Chief Executive of CHOICE.

The resignation was announced by Federal Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, who did not provide any background to the departure but said Kell will step down from the role on 6 December.

“The Coalition Government thanks Mr Kell for his contribution to ASIC and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” Frydenberg said, adding “His experience and understanding of corporate regulation has been appreciated by successive governments as well as members of ASIC.”

Earlier this year, the Federal Government appointed Daniel Crennan QC as a second deputy chair for a period of five years, as well as former chief executive of Equipsuper, Danielle Press and former Tabcorp group general counsel, Sean Hughes as two new Commissioners.
