A new US study has found that frequent alcohol consumption increases women’s risk of cancer mortality by almost one third.

… high frequency drinking increased the risk of cancer in women, but the increased risk in men was linked to quantity

As reported in the Medical Observer, the study found that high frequency drinking increased the risk of cancer in women, but the increased risk in men was linked to quantity, rather than frequency.

According to the report, frequent consumption of alcohol increased the risk of breast cancer in women by 44%.

In contrast, men who drank more than three drinks on ‘drinking days’ raised their risk of cancer by 24%, and men who drank more than three days a week increased their risk of prostate cancer by 55%.

Director of addiction medicine at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, Professor Jon Currie, said: “GPs don’t have to feel they are being moralistic to patients when talking about cutting down their alcohol consumption; it’s clearly now evidence based.”

The study pooled data from more than 320,000 men and women in the US.
