The Facts About Cancer Claims

CommInsure is publishing a set of articles for advisers that outline the basic facts about the ‘big four’ diseases and events responsible for more than 90% of all trauma claims.

Released as part of CommInsure’s weekly Did You Know series, the first disease of the big four, Cancer, was the leading cause of all trauma claims at CommInsure in 2009.

In the article, CommInsure’s National Technical Manager, Peter Rushbrook, asks the company’s Manager of Medical Research and Development, Aamer Fattah, to set out for advisers the basics and nature of Cancer – how it is defined in medical terms and how it is classified.

Mr Fattah briefly explains the five main categories of primary site cancers (eg Carcinoma, Sarcoma etc), as well as the five different stages into which cancers can be classified (eg In situ, Localised etc).

The article uses the example of prostate cancer to demonstrate how medically accepted standards are applied to identify the different stages of this disease and how the same ‘staging system’ can be used to assist in determining a patient’s treatment options and prognosis.

Over the coming weeks, CommInsure will release similar articles that will cover the other main events responsible for most trauma clainms: heart attack, stroke and heart bypass surgery.
