CALI continues to urge the Federal Government to enact legislation prohibiting the use of genetic test results in insurance, but what’s your view?
Do you do you agree with CALI’s position? Or are there circumstances where you believe underwriters should be able to access genetic test results?
It’s a vexed question, because the last thing anyone wants is for Australians to refrain from undertaking a genetic test for fear of the outcome impacting their ability to access the life cover they need.
At the same time though, insurers need to manage and protect the quality of their risk pool, which might see a greater proportion of people taking out cover who know they have greater chance of dying or contracting critical conditions because of genetic tests they have taken, but would not be required to disclose the results at underwriting.
Cast your vote in our latest poll and we’ll report back next week with the result.

Ahh the soothing feeling of ignoring the unintended, but very obvious consequences.
The tragic irony will be the accelerated unaffordability of premiums. So a round of applause to CALI, I guess…
Yes the start of the path to higher community pricing
