Not enough Australians are self-checking for possible signs of skin cancer, according to a report released by TAL.

Its SpotChecker Australian Skin Safety Report explores Australians’ attitudes and actions around skin safety in a bid to encourage people to self-check their skin.

…one-third [of Australians] have never had their skin checked for signs of cancer

The report reveals more than two thirds of Australians have not had a skin check in the past 12 months and that one-third have never had their skin checked for signs of cancer.

TAL CMO Dr Priya Chagan …a disconnect between Australians’ intentions when it comes to skin safety and their actions

TAL’s SpotChecker initiative, now in its fifth year, states that 86 per cent of Australians are unaware of the high incidents of skin cancer in the country.

The insurer’s Chief Medical Officer and General Manager of Health Services, Dr Priya Chagan, says there is a disconnect between Australians’ intentions when it comes to skin safety and the actions they are taking.

In partnership with Firstcheck the insurer offers 1,500 free online spot checks a year where people can upload photos of their skin to be reviewed by a specialist. Since the launch of TAL SpotChecker in 2016 the insurer reports it has delivered more than 4,500 free professional skin checks across Australia.
